Namun untuk menyambut peringatan Hari Bumi yang sebentar lagi tiba tidak ada salahnya Alamendah’s Blog kembali mengulas sejarah itu.
Sebagai mana diketahui, sejarah peringatan Hari Bumi (Earth Day) diselenggarakan pertama kali pada 22 April 1970 di Amerika Serikat. Penggagasnya adalah Gaylord Nelson, seorang senator Amerika Serikat dari Wisconsin yang juga pengajar lingkungan hidup.
Gagasan tentang peringatan Hari Bumi mulai disampaikan oleh Gaylord Nelson sejak tahun 1969. Saat itu Gaylord Nelson memandang perlunya isu-isu lingkungan hidup untuk masuk dalam kurikulum resmi perguruan tinggi. Gagasan ini kemudian mendapat dukungan luas.

Dukungan ini mencapai puncaknya pada tanggal 22 April 1970. Saat itu sejarah mencatat jutaan orang turun ke jalan, berdemonstrasi dan memadati Fifth Avenue di New York untuk mengecam para perusak bumi. Majalah TIME memperkirakan bahwa sekitar 20 juta manusiaturun ke jalan pada 22 April 1970.

Moment ini kemudian menjadi tonggak sejarah diperingatinya sebagai Hari Bumi yang pertama kali. Tanggal 22 April juga bertepatan dengan musim semi di Northern Hemisphere (belahan bumi utara) sekaligus musim gugur di belahan bumi selatan. Sejak itu, pada tanggal 22 April setiap tahunnya Hari Bumi (Earth Day) diperingati.
Sejarah mencatat, Hari Bumi merupakan kampanye untuk mengajak orang peduli terhadap lingkungan hidup. Gerakan untuk meningkatkan kesadaran dan apresiasi terhadap planet yang ditinggali manusia ini yaitu bumi. Hari Bumi telah menjadi sebuah gerakan global yang mendunia hingga kini. Pelaksanaannya di seluruh dunia dikordinasi oleh Earth Day Network’s, sebuah organisasi nirlaba beraggotakan berbagai LSM di seluruh dunia.
PBB sendiri memilih tanggal 20 Maret saat di mana matahari tepat diatas khatulistiwa sebagai peringatan Hari Bumi. Ini mengacu pada ide “hari bagi orang-orang Bumi” yang dicetuskan aktivis perdamaian John McConnell. Hari yang lebih dikenal sebagai “Hari Bumi Equinoks” ini diperingati PBB setiap tahunnya sejak 21 Maret 1971. Namun PBB juga mengakui tanggal 22 April sebagai hari bumi yang dilaksanakan secara global. PBB secara resmi merayakannya 22 April sebagai “International Mother Earth Day“.
